A late, informal study of the white-haired John Tyndall at 73 years. Half-length, the sitter is in a relaxed, contemplative posture, lounging back in his chair. His hands rest in his lap with fingers interlaced. Apparently caught in thought while writing, an open silver inkwell is on the table in front, with paper and pen. A bookcase occupies the right-hand background, but Tyndall’s head and shoulders are framed by a dark cushion.
