In October 1858 the Wiltshire magistrates paid tribute to the long service of the sitter by presenting him (at the Marlborough Quarter Sessions) with his portrait, painted by 'Phillips'. No first name has been found, but lack of known alternative of such generally assumed familiarity suggests it must have been Henry Wyndham Phillips. Later evidence also suggests that the original continued in Swayne's family into the twentieth century. This is therefore presumed to be a copy, of rather harder style than autograph Phillips: the earliest newspaper reference to it hanging in Wilton town hall is in June 1894 and it was probably painted rather earlier, either around or before Swayne's death in 1865.
