John Skinner was born in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, and studied at Aberdeen University, the Free Church College, and New College Edinburgh. He was ordained into the Free Church of Scotland in 1880 as minister of St Fergus, and then became minister at Kelso from 1886 to 1890. An Old Testament scholar, in 1890 he accepted a call to become the Professor of Old Testament, Language, Literature and Theology at the English Presbyterian College in London. The College moved to Cambridge in 1899, becoming Westminster College, and in 1908 Skinner was appointed its Principal. He retired in 1921.
