George Rennie made this sketch of his father John Rennie using a camera lucida from a bust sculpted by Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey. This sketch was enclosed in a letter from George Rennie dated 13th November 1822 addressed to John Bain indicating it may be useful in the new die William Bain was to engrave. At the time George Rennie wrote this letter he was employed as Surveyor of the Maltings and Clerk of the Irons (dies) at the Royal Mint, a position he was appointed to in 1818 on the recommendation of James Watt and Sir Joseph Banks. The engraving was used to produce the Rennie Memorial Medal.
