Chemist and physicist John Dalton is depicted seated, wearing a draped academic gown and knee-breaches. John Dalton established the nineteenth century theory that atoms are the smallest particles of matter – this theory was superseded in 1897 by the work of J. J. Thomson. The statue was removed to this site from Piccadilly Gardens in 1961, on completion of Dalton College.
