A life-size male figure in medieval dress and cap, seated on a large chair, his head turned to the right, his arms resting on a book in his lap. Two boys kneel either side of him each holding a book, the right-hand figure appearing to be reading out loud while the others listen. A further pile of six books lies under the chair. The whole group is mounted on a stone pedestal which stands beneath a large hexagonal iron canopy of six columns supporting a circular horizontal border decorated with Saxon letters. Above the border rise three intersecting arches surmounted by a Gothic four-sided niche containing a miniature figure of the Christ child standing on the lap of a seated Virgin. Six other niches, containing figures of angels playing trumpets or holding scrolls, are placed at the top of each column above a capital of curling leaf design, and to one side of the circular border hangs a decorated iron cross surmounted by a figure of Christ suspended over a lily on a stalk.
