The sitter was the artist’s fiancée at the time of painting in 1913. In 1915 he was killed in the Dardanelles campaign of the First World War, serving as a Private in the 5th Royal Scottish Regiment. She did not subsequently marry and should also not be confused with her older contemporary, the Scottish painter Jessie McGregor (1847–1919).
