A life-size draped standing figure on tapered square granite pedestal, with inscription and verses by Montgomery. James Montgomery, who died in 1854, was a noted local journalist and hymnologist. The work was originally erected in Sheffield General Cemetery in 1860, and subsequently moved to the cathedral precinct.
