Montagu was a distinguished scholar, and translated the works of King James I. He was first Master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge 1598–1608, and Dean of Worcester 1604–1608, before being appointed Bishop of Bath and Wells. Amongst his surviving works to 'beautify and expand the Bishop's Palace' are the Jacobean Staircase and the West Window in the Bishop's Chapel. He restored the nave in Bath Abbey, which had been roofless and in a state of disrepair. In 1616 he was made Bishop of Winchester and was appointed Prelate of the Order of the Garter. He was buried in Bath Abbey, where his tomb with his effigy is on the north side of the nave.
