This is one of a series of 39 paintings produced by Stephen Chaplin based upon his memories of his childhood during the Second World War in Orpington. This painting shows the 1930s ward at Farnborough Hospital where Stephen Chaplin stayed in 1940 when having his leg operated on. Sand bags can be seen against the windows, and Stephen is in his bed. Bored, the young patients sang songs together to pass the time, including 'I've got a Sixpence', 'You'll get no Promotion' and 'Bless 'em All'.
