Domestic interior with a lady seated to the left, who has put aside some sewing to select a piece of fish from a wooden board held by a maid, standing to the right. The lady is dressed in white garments with a red jacket trimmed with white fur, one of her white shoes lies on the floor before her. The servant is dressed mainly in brown, with a bodice and a white shawl. A low wooden chair stands in the bottom right corner, with a brush and cloth lying discarded on the seat, a hexagonal object on the floor nearby. Beneath an open window in background to left, is a table laid with a heavy red cloth on which sits a tall goblet and a book. A large painting of a shepherdess hangs on the wall in the background, with a black and gold wall clock to the right.
