An elegantly dressed lady sits on a chaise longue ready to take tea. The table is set for four so perhaps she is waiting for the arrival of guests. In the background a man plays the piano. The sunlight is blocked out by an orange blind which provides the picture with a dazzling focal point, contrasting starkly with the bold expanses of black and green elsewhere in the composition. It is quite clear that a love of colour and design dominated this artist's approach to his work.

Cadell and his fellow artists Peploe, Fergusson and Hunter were known as the Scottish Colourists. All four worked in Paris between 1900 and 1914 and were influenced by the startlingly original pictures of Matisse and Cézanne.
