The patient is seated in the centre, with his jacket and shirt removed to expose his chest and right arm. Behind him and to the left, the surgeon leans over and inserts an instrument through the patient's exposed arm. The surgeon's apprentice stands on the left holding a vessel of liquid. In the right background, two women converse. Beyond them, a back room is seen in which a barber shaves a man and another man with his arm in a sling waits seated on a chair. Left background, a large painting of a marine subject, framed in a black frame, is hung on a white plaster wall. The floor is marble, the ceiling is coffered, and there are other signs of affluence. Possibly identical with one of two paintings of surgical operations sold at auction by Philippus Schley in Amsterdam on 16 February 1802.
