Three men, one in a vivid red coat another in blue breeches, are playing cards at a table inside a Tavern. The player in red gestures towards his neighbour who is about to lay down the ace of hearts. The third man leans backwards, guardedly showing a fourth man standing nearby his hand of cards. This man is wrapped in a cloak and holds a glass. Above their heads to the right some tankards and a pitcher hang on the wall. On the back wall is a birdcage and to the left, a leaded window, in front of which is another table at which three men and a woman converse. A broken clay pipe lies on the floor in the foreground to the left.
