Nottingham-born artist Permindar Kaur creates sculptural objects and installations that explore the territory of cultural identity, home and belonging. She does this by apparently innocent means, invoking childhood and domestic spaces.
In 'Independence', the identical tiny figures slump over copper spears that pin them to the wall. Each is fitted with a pair of copper boots and a helmet, creating a work that is both charming and disquieting. The figures might be the memory of a childhood game, or hint at a more violent adult world. This sculpture was commissioned by the Castle Museum in 1997 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Indian Independence.
