This painting was previously called ‘A Negress’ and later changed to 'A Woman'.

The first change was part of the collection's commitment to removing offensive language. The second was in response to Art UK's Art Detective service, which highlighted the startling similarity between the sitter in our painting and 'Imogen' by Frank Graham Bell, in the collection of Derby Museums and Art Gallery. By recognising Imogen as the sitter, we hope we have added to the portrait's meaning and impact.

Bell and Rogers were both members of the Euston Road School, founded in 1937. Looking at the two portraits together, it is easy to imagine them being painted at the same time.
