This painting is of two Humber sloops off Hessel on the River Humber. There is a mill still on the site which was quarried for chalk stone. The vessel in the foreground is on a run over a flood tide, the foresail has been stowed and a square sail has been deployed to take advantage of the following wind along with the gaff main sail and topsail. The jib, although hoisted, is not effective in this condition but is kept hoisted to benefit the vessel when she comes back on the wind. The Humber sloops carried a square sail and are often mistaken for a Humber keel. The second vessel, also a Humber sloop, is beating to windward with the tide. She has a slightly different rig without topmast which may indicate that she is a 'river' sloop rather than a 'coasting' sloop.
