An old inscription on the back of the painting helped to identify the young boy as Hugh Smyth, second son of Sir Hugh Smyth of Ashton Court, near Bristol. Young Hugh wears a Persian jacket, which was fashionable in the period 1660–1670. He died in 1681 aged just 18 years. Also at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery is a later female portrait believed to be Elizabeth Smyth (née Astry), the wife of Hugh's brother Sir John Smyth. The portraits were painted by the same artist, are of a similar size and are displayed in their similar, original frames.
