The Lennard family acquired the Barrett name in 1644. Richard Lennard (1625–1696), Lord Dacre, assumed the name as well as the Belhus estates in Essex through his relative Edward Barrett of Belhus, Lord Barrett of Newburgh (1581–1645), from the Barretts of Aveley. As a result, the successive descendants of that particular family branch would assume both family names, Barrett and Lennard. Lord Newburgh and Richard’s father, Sir Richard Lennard (1596–1630) were cousins. Richard married Anne Loftus (d.1659) in 1652, an orphan who had lived with the Earl of Stafford’s family. Sir Lennard Barrett acquired estates in Ireland due to his marriage to Anne Loftus, whose grandfather, Sir Francis Rushe, Lord of the Manor of Clones, had in County Monaghan, Ireland.
