Glasgow Museums has both an 1886 plaster relief (S.46) and a later bronze cast (S.87) of Harry Bates's Homer in its collection.
The plaster relief with a crushed velvet surround was presented to the Corporation of Glasgow by the Exhibition Association of the Glasgow International Exhibition in 1888 (no. 1533). Its price was £100. In 1899, Mrs Bates, the widow of Harry Bates, sought permission to have a plaster cast made from Glasgow's. This was agreed in January 1902.
The bronze, cast by Holinshed & Burton, was purchased by the Corporation from the founders for £55 in May 1901, which was the year Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was opened.
The panels illustrate Coleridge's lines: 'A blind old man and poor / Sweet he sings'. A related drawing came up for sale at Sotheby's London on 6th June 1997 (lot 78).
