The statue likely represented a French or British city. In a 1967 British Pathé newsreel ‘Crystal Palace’ (1967), sculpture is shown with a refined face and crown, modestly draped but with her hands missing. By 1981, she was headless with a hollow back. A painted head is a recent addition. Reputedly, wind blowing through the hole causes an eerie sound.
