This is the largest work by Wallis, carved from a single block of limewood. It was commissioned in 1853 by Henry Lygon, 4th Earl Beauchamp, of Madresfield Court, who considered it 'far surpassed anything he had seen of the productions of Grinling Gibbons'. At some time the glass case in which it was mounted was broken, the heron suffered damage and was remounted on an inappropriate backboard without a case.

It was restored and re-cased in the style of Wallis by Savino del Prete.
