Hercules is portrayed heroically standing beside a tree stump with his left hand bent across the front of his chest holding the pelt of the Nemean Lion which is thrown over his right shoulder and hangs down behind his left leg. In his right hand, he holds not a club, the symbol of his strength and virtue, but a distaff which is the stick that holds the wool from which thread is spun. The statue is muscularly treated in keeping with antique prototypes. The slightly curved treatment of the face of the base may suggest that this figure was originally intended for a niche. There are some traces of earlier paint. This is a piece of some quality although it is unlikely to be the work of a leading sculptor. The statue is raised on a Portland stone plinth which is ornamented with a fascia with a torus moulding and cimatium above.
