After efforts to establish itself in Cardiff, the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art (founded in 1882) was offered a home by Lord Mostyn in the Elizabethan town house, Plas Mawr, in Conwy. Clarence Whaite became its first president in 1885. Born in Manchester where his father had an art gallery and framing business, Whaite had trained in London, travelled extensively, and was a member and later president of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts; he exhibited widely, had a studio in London, exhibited at the Royal Academy, and was an active member of the Royal Watercolour Society. Whaite was a frequent visitor to North Wales, joining the artists at Betws-y-Coed around David Cox in the 1850s. He took up residence near Conwy around 1870 and married a local woman.
