John Partridge was a successful society and portrait painter. Following his experiences in Italy he moved towards a continental academic style in the 1830s, his work was thus more polished and 'natural' than that produced by other English artists. In 1842 he exhibited portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and in the following year he was appointed 'Portrait Painter Extraordinary' to Her Majesty. Palmerston's widow, for reasons only known to herself, requested the replacement of the portrait's head with that of an earlier painting by Partridge. Fortunately the portrait was engraved in mezzotint by S. Cousins in 1852, thus recording the appearance of the original face.
