The nude figure of Hebe reclines on her left side on a wall above the shallow bowl of the fountain. She leans on her left elbow and reaches with her right hand to the plume of water that sprays up from the bowl. The statue is modelled on a young London dancer, Katterina Williams. Hebe was chosen from names submitted by the public via a survey conducted in the Birmingham Mail. The statue was unveiled by the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Charles Simpson. It was removed for repairs to damage caused by vandalism in September 1981, these were completed by July 1982 and the sculpture was reset on a modified base in May 1983. Hebe was a Greek goddess, the daughter of Zeus and Hera and the wife of Hercules, she was a cupbearer to the gods of the Greek pantheon.
