The label reads ‘My likeness painted by G F Jo…h …Decemb … lliam…’ . It is possible that this is William Theobald (1795–1850), the son of John Theobald, who had made money in the hosiery trade and then built up a racing stud. William may have worked initially with his father. He is the only William known so far to be connected with Brodsworth Hall, as his daughter, Georgiana, married Charles Sabine Thellusson in 1850, and they later lived at Brodsworth Hall. Several paintings formerly owned by the Theobald family came to Brodsworth Hall through this marriage, so it is possible that this is one of them. The artist George Francis Joseph was a prolific portrait painter in this period.
