George Vicat Cole was a highly popular Victorian landscape painter and this is a fine example of his work. He found his subjects throughout England, Wales and Scotland but was especially fond of views along the Thames. This harvest scene is in Surrey, painted from Holmbury Hill, Holmbury St Mary, looking towards the south-west. The Surrey Hills, the Lower Greensand ridge that runs between Dorking and Guildford, can be seen with Ewhurst Windmill on their crest. The harvesters have been brought refreshments after a day of cutting corn by hand, while in the foreground are wild flowers that were once typical of cornfields – blue cornfowers, red poppies, corn chamomile and lesser bindweed. Vicat Cole lived only a couple of miles from his viewpoint at this time, in the village of Abinger.
