three bronze plaques affixed to the plinth: This statue was funded by public subscription. / The sculpture, by Gerald Palmer, / was cast at the Underwood foundry, / Mayenne, France.; this statue was unveiled on / 30th July 2001 by Tony Jacklin, CBE, / Open Champion 1969, United States / Open Champion 1970.; HARRY VARDON / (1870-1937) / Harry Vardon, winner of six 'Open' Championships / and the first Briton to win the United States Open, / was born and played on this ancient common. / He perfected the overlapping way of holding the / golf club, known world-wide as the Vardon Grip.
