The artist wrote: 'In 1918 boys and girls started work at the age of 12. Half-time, starting work at 6am and 1pm every alternate week. Starting at 6am we worked for two hours until 8am, then half an hour for breakfast (no canteen) then work again until 12 noon. We had school of course in the afternoon, and the Mill from 1pm–5pm, with no tea breaks. We were issued with a half-time book which had to be signed by both the schoolmaster and work manager at the end of each week to make sure there was no absenteeism. I understand this book is now with the Manchester Education Offices. Half-time wages were five shillings per week.'
