Guanyin is a Bodhisattva, or Buddhist deity. Bodhisattvas have obtained enlightenment, but have chosen to remain among men to help them reach nirvana. By the tenth century AD, Guanyin, who represented compassion, was probably the most popular figure in Chinese Buddhism.
