The politician Lord Granville was the Chancellor of the University of London, 1856–1891 – longer than any other incumbent except for HRH Princess Anne (1981–). It was in his time as Chancellor that Convocation (a body of graduate members) was formed, that the University opened its examinations to students anywhere in the world, began to award scientific degrees, introduced special examinations for women, moved into its first building, secured its own Member of Parliament, and established a University Library. The work is in a gilt gesso frame. 'Dr Storrar, as Chairman of the Committee of the University of London Portrait Fund, presented to the University Portrait of the Chancellor, Earl Granville, painted by George Richmond, Esq., at the instance of that Committee.
