This colour Polaroid print forms part of a photographic series of children's writers, for which Sulter was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery for their 2001 exhibition 'Beatrix Potter to Harry Potter: Portraits of Children's Writers'. Grace Nichols, children's poet and writer. Born in Georgetown in 1950, Guyana, and raised in a remote village, Nichols' experiences of moving to the city with her family when she was eight were central to her first novel 'Whole of a Morning Sky' (1986). She worked as a teacher and journalist and gained a diploma in communications at the University of Guyana. She moved to the UK in 1977. Her first poetry collection, 'I is a Long-Memoried Woman', was published in 1983. The book won the Commonwealth Poetry Prize and a subsequent film adaptation of the book was awarded a gold medal at the International Film and Television Festival of New York.
