The Gorse Hill Park entrance was re-designed by Trafford MB Council who commissioned new artwork; Gates, Railings and Pier Panels from Chrysalis Arts. The project was part of a major refurbishment of the park with high quality and community involvement key to improve local perception and foster a sense of pride and ownership. In 1994 Kate Maddison designed the double Sun Gates, two single Shadow Gates, an Earth and a Moon Panel, eight Community Panels and a series of Pier Panels for eight masonry piers. Artist-led community workshops were held in 1995 to develop the themes and create the silhouette images for the eight Community Panels. A delay in the refurbishment works led to a period of project postponement resulting in a budget review of the artworks.
