This unusual small sculpture focuses on the organic forms of an exotic gloxinia, a type of orchid. Without the title, we might assume that the work was totally abstract. The forms used echo Fergusson's lasting preference for the use of curving, rounded shapes, symbolising sensuousness, abundance and fertility.

After sculpting the gloxinia, Fergusson painted it on a dramatic scale in 'Gloxinias and Fuchsias' (accession number 1992.276) of 1938. In the painting, form is simplified to stress flowing, rhythmic lines in place of complex, underlying structures. The sculpture was cast in brass which was an innovative choice of material.
