In the early 1770s, Mengs painted a number of informal portraits of his friends and colleagues. The sculptor Giuseppe Franchi was well known in antiquarian circles in Rome, acquainted with Winckelmann, and a collector of plaster casts of classical antiquities. This portrait shows him with a bust of Homer, looking directly at the viewer and with his mouth open as if about to speak.
