Sculpture, white marble, of a young girl seated, half-naked, weaving fishing net. The intricate carving of the net suggests an Italian sculptor, as they excelled in technical virtuosity. 'Peasant’ as a genre subject matter became increasingly popular in 19th century, although the classical characteristics of the sculpture elevate the subject matter. The figure is possibly Penelope (the wife of Odysseus, weaving or unweaving the shroud she kept working on to put off her suitors) although the half-nude portrayal suggests not, as Penelope would not want to attract suitors. Additionally, it is a fishing net rather than a shroud being made by the young girl. Purchased by Charles Sabine Thellusson at the 1865 Dublin exhibition.
