A girl holds up a salver, an expression of distaste on her face, while a shadowy figure stands on the left. With the crackly paint surface, the details are indistinct.

This poor appearance is partly due to the bituminous dark paint that has been used, which has cracked and bubbled in drying. Artists often experimented with pigments and binders in the 18th century, sometimes with unfortunate results. The artist of this painting is not known, but it is in the manner of the artist John Opie.
