This engineer worked with Isambard Kingdom Brunel on the Great Western Railway. In 1852 he became a trustee of the Dowlais Ironworks. When Lady Charlotte Guest stepped down from running the works upon remarrying in 1855, he took complete control until his death. He was largely responsible for Dowlais’ position as the premier steelworks in the late nineteenth century.

George was a noted antiquarian and Captain of the 2nd (Dowlais) Corps, Glamorgan Rifle Volunteers.
