A larger than life-size portrait statue, surmounting a stone pedestal, rising from two steps. George Leach Ashworth was made an alderman after the incorporation of Rochdale in 1856. As Chairman of the General Purposes Committee he directed public works and improvements in the town. He supervised the construction of the Town Hall, the purchase of the Water Works, and the construction of the Bury Road. He was a central figure in the relief committee during the cotton famine of 1861–1865 and twice mayor of the borough.
