The Earl attempted to settle first in Russia, then in Venice, before entering the service of Frederick the Great of Prussia. The Earl was sent as Frederick's ambassador to Versailles in 1751, then became Governor of Neuchâtel. In 1759 the attainder against him was reversed and he returned to live in Britain. His time in Britain was not happy and he returned to Europe, living first at Neuchâtel before returning to Berlin in 1764 where he continued his close friendship with Frederick the Great until his death in 1778.
