A bronze, over-life-size statue of Gordon of Khartoum set on a Portland stone base with enrichments and two bronze plaques. Gordon is represented as a staff officer, wearing a patrol jacket. His head bent slightly forward, rests on his raised right hand. In his left hand, he holds a Bible. His short rattan cane, known from his Chinese campaign as his Wand of Victory, is held under his left arm. His weight is on his right foot, and his left foot is raised on a broken cannon. The pedestal is elaborately designed with an emphatically projecting cornice, whose underside is decorated with floral motifs, intertwined with a band recording Gordon’s campaigns. A lead gutter runs around the upper surface of the cornice, and two lions’ heads at the corners at the back discharge rainwater through small lead pipes.
