Originally, they formed part of the railings for the 1872 cast iron pagoda designed by Thomas Jeckyll for Barnard Bishop and Barnards as their entry to the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1872. Each gate is made up of six upright sunflowers with gilded petals and stylised leaves. They were photographed outside the tennis courts by George Plunkett in 1932. After years of relocation, vandalism and neglect the gates were restored and resited in 2004 by City Works.
