The centre of the picture is dominated by group of blast furnaces mostly in silhouette but with forms defined in blue/grey monotone. Left of centre is large chimney stack and in centre on sky line is a further chimney with smoking/flaming plume. The furnaces sit on a plateau the forward face of which depicts the form of the edge tipped slag bank on which small outcrops of green vegetation grow. Marks made on the face of the bank provide a strong directional emphasis towards the group of furnaces. The near viewpoint on the left has a mound of broken ground with the angular shapes of industrial waste above which is a solitary telegraph pole.
