Potworowski was born in Warsaw and had already acquired a reputation as an artist in Poland when he moved to Paris in 1924 and studied under Fernand Léger. The German invasion of Poland in 1940 forced him to flee and, travelling to Sweden on foot, he made it to Britain in 1943. He stayed for 15 years and, between 1949 and 1958, worked as Tutor at the Bath Academy of Art, nurturing a truly European perspective in his pupils during the bleak post-war years.

This painting depicts Najac, a hill village near Toulouse with Roman remains and a medieval castle. Potworowski avoids the obviously picturesque and portrays a windy public space where ancient buildings are obscured by telephone cables, bunting, and figures on the move.
