The piece is based on a former miner who was one of the first allied soldiers to enter Belsen concentration camp on its liberation in the Second World War.

written on a plaque fixed to the middle front of the bench: "Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers" / They said for king and country / we should do as we were bid. / They said old soldiers never die - / but plenty young ones did. / Sculpture by Ray Lonsdale / in association with Artsbank (Saltburn); from the information board "A gift of thanks for our beautiful country and coast. Dedicated to my husband Michael, on our wedding anniversary 10 December 2011."
