A portrait of Thomas Grainger. He was a prominent advocate for the introduction of railways. In 1825 with John Miller (1805–1883) he formed the partnership Grainger & Miller. The partnership undertook many important railway projects in Scotland, including the Edinburgh and Glasgow line and many more in Scotland's central belt and beyond. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1850 and served as President of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts.
