Design for a plate to J. C. Lavater’s, ‘Essays on Physiognomy’, translated by Henry Hunter, London 1789–1798, vol.III.ii., facing p.350. Lettering from top left to right, bottom left to right. Lavater analyses each eye. Briefly, one ‘shows force, candour and goodness’, in two ‘the upper part is more expressive than the under’; three reveals ‘an energetic fool’; four ‘loves, believes, hopes and suffers: he has the power of concentrating different faculties toward one and the same point’.
