The village of Culmore at the narrows where the river enters Lough Foyle, with the mountains of Inishowen beyond. Culmore Fort, a small Irish tower-house castle erected around the sixteenth century by the O'Doherty lords of Inishowen. At the end of that century it came into English hands and was refortified. It continued as a military installation into the beginning of the eighteenth century.
