This is one of the larger examples of van Kessel's small pictures showing specimens of plant and animal life. It is possible that it may have formed the centrepiece in a set of smaller panels. By comparison with the other panels in Oxford, the handling is rougher, suggesting a later date, probably in the late 1650s or early 1660s.
